The purpose behind creating this portfolio originated from the growing connection and joy I have found in exploring the forests of North Carolina. Although the focus is not of these specific forest areas, I have discovered that many others, through my research and personal encounters, experience a connection with these amazing growths that occur all over the planet. I use the word “connection” because that is how I want to communicate the forests of the planet. Despite the perceived divide that many societies have manifested between the environment and ourselves I believe that it is important to acknowledge and experience the connection that we have with this expansive natural resource. Whether or not an individual has ever been in the presences of these amazing locations does not diminish the political, economic, ethnographic, or social connections that bind our existence to the integrity of the forest itself.
The first goal for my portfolio is to examine the diverse forest systems of the planet in order to create a mindset for readers to use when exploring the rest of the site. The second goal is to show the intricate role that forest management systems can play in altering the conditions of the complex forest structures seen through out the world. Finally, my third goal is to look at the position of political ecology and the connection that I previously mentioned to political, economic, and social factors that represent the framework of our society.
I look forward to expanding the perspective of this site to incorporate the diversity that can be found in forests and cultures alike. Enjoy your walk Through The Woods.
